Description
1966 HASBRO GI JOE Action Soldier Sold ONLY in TOKYO! One of the most unbelieveable Vintage GI Joe figures ever available! Over the last decade we've seen many RARE originally packaged GI Joe figures selling on Ebay. Such items as Shoulder Stamped & Etched figures, Hasbro Salesmans' Samples in boxes stating AMERICAS MOVEABLE FIGHTING MAN (rather than illustrations on the lower right panel) along with 'blank' Field Manuals. We've seen many versions of the Canadian Mountie, Talking GI Joes, Basic & Talking Adventure Pack Gift Sets, GI Nurse figures, every variation of the Action Soldiers of the World, the Green Beret - and every Adventure Team GI Joe, but..... YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS! HERE'S THE STORY BEHIND THE TOY! The Seibu Department Store in Tokyo, offered this GI Joe figure for sale (as well as the deluxe 'COMBAT' series, window packaged exclusives). Only Action Soldier packages were available to the children of Japan (there were no Sailors, Marines or Pilots). The Action Soldier you see here is a survivor, and was sold packaged in the basic Army uniform, wearing the standard O.D. fatigues, fatigue cap, Combat boots and Dog Tag. In Japan, at Seibu, these GI Joe's always included an Army Combat helmet, an M-1 Garand Rifle and a Cartridge Belt. The actual box that this figure comes in is different than the GI Joe boxes that were printed and assembled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The box you see here was actually MADE IN JAPAN! The difference in 'printed information' as listed on this Japan-Made box - different from the Hasbro US-Made Action Soldier box is - the omission of the statement: "UNIFORM MADE IN JAPAN AND BRITISH CROWN COLONY OF HONG KONG". This information is listed on millions of other GI Joe Action Soldier boxes, but not this one. In order to bypass taxes (as to the country of origin of where these components were manufactured) the language was purposelly omitted. In addition, the box is a slightly (and very noticeably) different grade of cardboard. It's die-cut, and fabricated using the standard rolled/ glued method (not the tab-flap version). Interestingly, the 'Registered' symbols are roughly half the size of the Hasbro US-Made (Rhode Island) issue. Also, the soldier figure holding the rifle depicted on the front is also a bit darker. Additionally, the Olive Drab Green MP on the front lower right panel is clearly, and unmistakenly green (not brown, as on the US printed issue). I show as many shots as possible to illustrate the rarity of this figure. FIELD MANUAL, and WARRANTY BOTH PRINTED ALL IN JAPANESE! This 20 page, "One-Staple-Bound" manual shows a number of sets, originally shown in the US version of GI Joe's Army Field Manual, HOWEVER, the 1st issue three zipper GI Joe Astronaut uniform is illustrated, along with another type of drawing of the Deep Sea Diver. On the front page of the Manual there's somewhat of an explanation, that GI Joe's foot might come off when a boot is pulled down. There's also the GI Joe logo in Japanese on the cover (with another artists Soldier-Head dotting the 'J' in Joe). Plus, another drawing on the back cover, not of the Five Star Combat Jeep but rather, GI Joe in a running position, bulleted with 21 points of articulation. The manual has many other illustrations inside! Figure has large rubber blonde head. Slight discoloration on left side, and slight edge rub on left eyebrow (probably from shifting around in the box). Body is nice. Uniform is JAPAN, and shirt has garment tag with fresh crisp paper sewn in seam with pencil written-number on it. Pants are nice. Boots nice as well as Dog Tag, Stiff 'Castro' Fatigue cap, Japan marked Helmet and marked M-1 Garand. This figure set might have been very gently played with, although I cannot tell. Cartridge belt is exc. MISWBX denotes, Mint In Shelf Worn Box. Field Manual and Warranty complete the set. The Field Manual has yellowed, and has a rusted staple - and the Warranty has not yellowed as much. YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY WITH THIS GI JOE! I have 100% positive feedback! PLEASE LOOK AT MY OTHER AUCTIONS FOR MORE GI JOE ITEMS! Payment required at end of auction. Item will be sent the same or following day. PayPal accepted. Thank You!
