Class Ms-6 2-8-2 #4996' Description Southern Ry. Class Ms-6 Heavy 2-8-2 as rebuilt ca. 1930 from Ss-1 Class 2-10-2 #5224.  There were four of these, 4995-4997 and 4999 (The 4998 was rebuilt differently and was the only class Ms-5)..  The model is prototype specific for the 4996.  Model was cut down from Sunset Light USRA 2-10-2 in the same manner the prototype was done at Southern's Pegram Shop in Atlanta.  Three feet were cut out of the boiler behind the smokebox and the old #4 driver pedestal was cut out of the frame and the frame rebuilt.  The engine retained the 5' 3" driver spacing of the 2-10-2 for the first three axles but the fourth was 6' back from the main, as can be seen.   The boiler was cut down by Ed Tefs and the mechanism by Bernie Gallagher, who relocated the back sand dome and applied other boiler details.  Gallagher made a new set of side and main rods, crossheads and guides and the complete valve gear.  The 4996 was used in yard and transfer service around Knoxville, and local freight service to Bristol, etc.  Knoxville detail characteristics include the boxy rain covers over the sand piping at the domes, overfire air jets for smoke suppression, cylinder protection (drifting) valves and the "ski-slope" sides on the clear vision tender.  Model has Southern's "road-switcher" pilot, and the ATC inductor on the lead tender truck with associated conduits and case.  Has working headlight and cab detail.  Painted and decalled by Bernie Gallagher.  On static display for most of its life - needs running.  This is a rare model of a rare prototype - a real gem.
