More power was generated from the standard eight drivers than from engines with fewer driving wheels. With the support of four trailing wheels, the engine boasted a large firebox which increased boiler capacity. The M.T.H. Premier line models the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific prototypes. The Southern Pacific GS-2 came out in 1937 with cabs numbered 4410-4415. Its engine had to have the muscle to pull a 12-car, 626-ton train at high speeds over long distances. A 4-8-4 was the logical choice. Western Pacific ended its era of steam-powered engines with the Lima Locomotive Works-built GS-64 Northern. Did You Know?
