Description
---------------------Revision 1:I wrapped the set in its clear Lionel paper, but I am not as good at wrapping as the factory.  Hence the wrap is not "air tight" around the units.  I have done the best I could and there is no damage.  As I screwed those retainer screws into the engine, they probably punched some additional holes in the Lionel wrap - this is virtually unavoidable.  Also:  Price reduction.  -------------------NOTE: Some of you have gotten a nice paypal redemption coupon now for 10% any PayPal purchase.  This coupon will be worth a $100.00 off this item.  BE SURE TO ENTER THE REDEMPTION NUMBER AS WELL AS PAY WITH "PAYPAL" WHEN YOU PAY after I send you the invoice.  This coupon is good through Sept 4 for some of you.  Check with your ebay messages and look carefully for the little square green icon with the "10" inside of it.  August 22, 2008------------------------------------------If you drag C&O coal around your layout, you will need this unique JLC beauty by Lionel.  This is the later version of the Allegheny that had the "overfire jets" on the side of the firebox as the images illustrate.   This set listed for $1700 when it came out.  The best price for this engine set from the discount houses was $1409, but they are now gone.  If you have one of those 10% off PayPal coupons that eBay has given some users which expire midnight PDT, July 29, 2008 (Tue- Wed Midnight), then you can save yourself a hundred bucks by buying this with PayPal.  I have run it about 3 hours - not more than 7 hours.  It was run on an O-72 loop of "RealTrax" without any "switches".  It has never "de-railed".  It is in perfect shape.  Nothing wrong and no blemishes.   I run conventional mode with no smoke.  I have a modern MRC 270 watt transformer with built-in fast blow 10 amp relays to protect circuitry.  Other than the rail time it is NEW.  It has the new JLC black box and all the parts.  The black JLC box is in great shape and shines as it has been stored in the plastic bag in which it came. Unit sits on display in smoke, child, pet free home with air control.  The shipping carton looks new and has NO shipping labels as I had it "double boxed" for protection when I bought it new.  The tools and owner's manual and the unused "smoke" fluid are included in new unused condition.  There may be a bit of house dust on the set.  With the exception of the small run time, I would feel comfortable saying it is "mint".  The photos are of an identical set, but as I say there are no blemishes that I can see on mine.  I have inspected it carefully and there have been no mishaps.  It shall be double boxed when sent to you.  When Lionel shipped this classic, they incorporated a clever method to secure this heavy beast in the Styrofoam to protect against damage to the carton or set.  There are four metal "cups" that look about like small whiskey shot glasses with holes in the bottom.  These are tapered.  One packs the set in the Styrofoam, then inverts the package "upside down".  The tapered "cups" fit in tapered slots on the underside of the Styrofoam and screw into the bottom of the engine.  This secures the engine very effectively to the Styrofoam - even better than 3rd Rail does with their wooden strips.  In addition, this box has both of those nice black square rubber cushions at each end of the shipping carton - these are the same size as the end of the JLC black box - about 10x10 inches and make the package complete.  BE SURE WHEN YOU UNPACK THIS SET THAT YOU USE BOTH HANDS SECURELY ON THE STYROFOAM TO INVERT IT AND THEN UNSCREW THESE FOUR RETAINER SCREWS.  IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, YOU WILL BUST UP THE STYROFOAM TRYING TO FORCE THE ENGINE OUT!!!!  In addition, there are small chains tied to the tender that connect the tender body to the axles.  One must be careful in handling the tender that the axles do not "flop around" and break these small chains.  I am not sure why these chains are there.  There is a little metal plank hinged on the back of the floor of the engine.  This provides a walkway from the engine to the tender.  This should be folded down when shipping.   Maintenance:OIL: Not done yet- little use on engine- should be done soon if run  Grease:    Not done yet- little use on engine-Battery:    January 20, 2006 Duracell Tires:   Original As with most Lionel engines with 6 drivers, the front rear axles on both engines are flanged and the middle axle is "blanked" so as to not have problems on curves. While I am discussing maintenance, let me note here that I have several articulated steamers.  When I pick these up, I always use a clean cloth and grip the boiler over the center of the rear set of divers with my right hand and place my left hand under the front drivers for support and push up there.  The front drivers will "hang" if you do not do this.  I doubt that it hurts anything, but it looks bad and I would fret that something would come "undone".  If the old time train guys think I am being petty, all I will say is I wish someone would have told me these things when I first got back in trains five years ago.  It would have saved me several hundred dollars. I shall provide an extra printed copy of the owner's manual in addition to the original manual in the box.  I will burn the owner's manual to CD-Rom and put it in the package. I am selling this set because I have a second copy of this engine which I got "used" and is in need of work. The second set I am keeping looks good, but needs some maintenance and the boxes are bad.  Because I have free time and got this second set used set at a reasonable price, I shall keep it.  In addition, I have the  first version of this engine that Lionel produced in 1999 - the model 28011.======================Positive feedback will be submitted for as soon as you pay.  If you do not see feedback shortly after you pay, just remind me that I forgot.  ==================NOTE:  I take very good care of my trains- both new and used.  I do not touch them with my fingers, but use a clean dish cloth to move them.  I also put all my equipment on a pillow with a clean cloth on top of it when I work on them so that none of the details will be broken or bent - "TLC to the Max!!"  I want you to have merchandize that is perfect unless otherwise qualified.  I strongly prefer that buyers who still run engines with the OLD Lionel ZW transformer either not buy from me or understand that you are jeopardizing your circuitry when you use the OLD ZW. ( I am told ??? that if you run with TMCC or DCS (mth) the command control "buffers" the engine circuitry from the transformer.  But if you run in conventional mode, there is no protection for the sounds circuitry from the old ZW.) ====================Shipping:Shipping and insurance shall be $20.00.  Wisconsin residents add $65.00 - State Sales.  For this auction I shall also allow payment to be made by either PayPal or Money Order (Bank M.O. or US Postal M.O. are acceptable, but NOT Certified check or personal check).  FedEx ground to anywhere in the lower 48 states.   No Alaska, Hawaii, or International buyers.  No P.O.Boxes.  No Return.  Payment within 10 business days after sale. Please do NOT use eBay checkout to make me happy- I will contact you at the end of the auction for payment with an invoice.  You shall receive E-mail of tracking and fast shipment.AGAIN I REMIND YOU TO RE-READ THIS LISTING RE: THE UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS OF THE SET BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT - SO THE STYROFOAM IS NOT DAMAGE BECAUSE YOU DID NOT UNSCREW THE RETAINER CUPS WHICH SECURE THE ENGINE !=============================================Below is the "boiler plate" data from the Lionel web pages on this engine. You can find this on the Lionel web page.  C&O 6-38081 H8 H-8 JLC Allegheny 2-6-6-6 Cab #1650   In the 1940s, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway turned to the Lima Locomotive Works to produce a new powerhouse that would replace their aging H-7 class 2-8-8-2 coal haulers. Named in honor of the mountain range where they worked, this new locomotive took Lima's Superpower steam concept to a whole new level. Dubbed the Allegheny, it produced 7,500 horsepower at 40 m.p.h. and 110,200 lbs. of tractive force. The C&O designated the new steamers as class H-8, taking delivery of the first unit in 1941. The massive 2-6-6-6's could haul 10,000 ton trains from the coal fields of West Virginia to eastern ports. Despite their impressive performance, the switch to diesel power found the massive locomotives being retired as early as 1952. Although its career was brief, the sheer size and power of the Allegheny ensures its place among the roster of the greatest steam locomotives of all time.   This top-of-the-line O gauge locomotive accurately portrays C&O #1650, one of the last group built in 1948. Virtually every detail part and piece of piping is separately applied. Prototypical distinctions include cab window configurations, ladder arrangement and unique overfire jets.    Some of the latest Lionel innovations are found in this TMCC-equipped articulated steamer, including the unsurpassed RailSounds 5.0 sound system. Listen to the ultra-realistic four chuffs per driver revolution as the locomotive battles down the mainline. As speed increases the cadence of the chuff rate changes, just like the real thing.===============================    * FEATURES:    * TrainMaster Command Control equipped—able to run in Command Control Mode or in Conventional Transformer Control Mode    * Odyssey System for speed control with ON/OFF switch    * RailSounds 5.0 sound system with custom recorded effects including:    * Multi-part CrewTalk dialog and TowerCom announcements to create realistic operating scenarios from pulling out of the yard to initiating an emergency stop, in both conventional and command control environments    * Realistic operator-controlled effects, including the water injector, activated by the CAB-1 Remote Controller    * Prototypical four chuffs per revolution    * DynaChuff synchronized chuffing that shifts through 15 levels of intensity as the locomotive gains speed    * Simulate the locomotive running light or battling against a heavy load by manually adjusting the DynaChuff intensity with CAB-1 commands    * MultiWhistle effect simulates blows at different steam pressures, long and short attacks, and even extra quilling with each press of the whistle button    * Independently adjustable volume control—use the CAB-1 Remote Controller to lower the level of background effects such as chuffing while keeping operator-controlled effects such as the whistle at full volume    * Dual FatBoy speakers for the ultimate in sound reproduction    * High-torque Pittman® motor with momentum flywheel    * Wireless Tether connection between locomotive and tender    * Directional lighting including operating headlight and back-up light    * Illuminated classification and marker lights    * Illuminated number boards    * Die-cast metal locomotive body, frame and trucks    * Scale front coupler with interchangeable O gauge coupler for double-heading    * ElectroCoupler on rear of tender    * Traction tires    * Synchronized fan-driven smoke unit with adjustable smoke output    * Separately applied metal details    * Accurate separately applied builder's plates    * Opening cab roof hatch    * Illuminated cab interior with painted gauges, valves and walls    * Variable ashpan glow    * Flickering firebox in cab    * Cab window glass    * Engineer and fireman figures    * Die-cast metal tender body and trucks    * Individually opening tender water hatches reveal easy-to-access RailSounds controlsGauge: Standard ODimensions: Length: 32"RailLine: Chesapeake & OhioMinimum Curve: O-72========================================
